X-rays and radioactive particles are used for radiation therapy. Cancer cells divide and multiply more rapidly in the body than healthy cells. Radiation is more effective against rapidly multiplying cells, so it treats cancer by destroying cancer cells more than normal cells. Although the therapeutic effect of radiation has been known for more than a century, it could not be used effectively for treatment in the early days due to the inability to provide sufficient protection to healthy tissues.
In recent years, it has become possible to apply high-dose treatment that can completely cure the patient by destroying only tumor cells without damaging normal tissues, with advanced technology devices capable of performing 3-dimensional treatment in well-defined areas. Techniques such as IMRT and IGRT are now used to achieve complete cure in many types of diseases where only palliative treatment for relief or life extension could be performed in the past.

For successful treatment, the target mass must first be accurately determined. The 3-dimensional localization of the tumor to be irradiated and the radiation-sensitive tissues to be protected is provided by a simulator device specially developed for radiotherapy. This information is uploaded to a specially developed computer system called TPS for calculating the radiation dose and intensity to be applied. The data obtained from the planning here is transferred to the treatment device called a linear accelerator. With treatment devices equipped with IMRT and IGRT technology, tumor tissue is destroyed while healthy tissues are precisely protected.
