About Us
Onko was founded in Ankara in 1990 by medical oncologist Professor Dr. Önder Berk, and radiation oncologists Dr. Zeki Güran, Dr. Emin Kamgözen, and Dr. Cemil Kuşoğlu.
Prof. Dr. Önder Berk completed his medical and specialization training in Turkey and in the USA. Upon his return, he founded the Oncology department at Gülhane Military Medical Academy and established Turkey's first bone marrow transplant centre there. He participated in the establishment of Onko along with Dr. Zeki Güran (chief of the radiation oncology department at Ankara Oncology Hospital), Dr. Cemil Kuşoğlu, and Dr. Emin Kamgözen. He continued his professional activities here until he retired. Prof. Dr. Lale Atahan became the head of the Radiation Oncology Department at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine after completing her education in Turkey and America. Dr. Atahan, who began her private practice at Ankara Onko, continued her activities here until the end of her professional career. Dr. Cemil Kuşoğlu and Dr. Emin Kamgözen completed their medical and Radiation Oncology specialization training together at TED Ankara College, Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, and Ankara Oncology Hospital. After completing their military service together at Ankara GATA, they became the founding partners of Turkey's second private oncology centre. They currently continue their administrative and professional activities at Ankara Onko together with Prof. Dr. Ayşe Hiçsönmez.
Following the Onko Ankara Oncology Centre, Antalya Onko was opened in 1994 as the first radiotherapy centre in its region. It operated independently for 18 years until it became part of a private hospital.
Istanbul Onko opened in 1996 as the first private clinic on the Anatolian side and as the second private clinic in Istanbul. It continued treatments at that clinic for 17 years until it joined a hospital in 2014.
By its 35th anniversary, more than 40,000 patients have been treated at Onko. Numerous physicians and medical personnel who received training and gained experience in Onko clinics over the years are still providing healthcare services in various regions of Turkey and abroad.
